WWD shares insights on the Dôen business and I loved digging in. New beauty launches, and retail insights in this week's fashion and beauty industry update.
Re: the “Sephora kids” - I’m sure you’ve seen this already, but some summer camps have started banning kids from bringing beauty products with them. Not sure if that’s the solution to the problem. But good to see that some brands are stepping up to issue warnings for tweens not to use active ingredient-heavy products.
I did see. I try not to get too much into parenting or general regulation in here. But I love the idea of camp being low key and having fun. Also I’ve noticed, like many things, it is hard when some kids have and others don’t.
I have a Gen Alpha daughter and when she talks about skincare I love to ask her why she likes certain brands, we talk about marketing and innovating products. I also use as an opportunity to talk about using spf and caring for our bodies. I’m hoping the kids loving skincare today at a young age get inspired by graphic design, marketing, retail, dermatology and science of innovating products.
Did a little squeak to see my name mentioned! Would LOVE to know more about your Notion organisation. I’ve always wondered how the newsletter sausage is made for you, because you have such a clear and concise way of sharing such a vast amount of information! In awe! X
I’m not often described as clear or concise 😆 so thank you! I have a notion template/page for each pillar of posts (deep dive, fashion spiral, Sunday scoop etc) then I save articles as I read them and notes to the page as relevant. Then each post gets its own subpage and I move it in the subpage as I write it. I also have a ton of other notion pages I use for content, running the business etc. happy to chat sometime.
The Fashionphile store in Irvine needs some help. It’s just littered with loud logo bags. I do realize that’s what can sell in OC but some of us want other options!
I’d venture to say maybe both? OC is such a strange place. It’s very RHOC on one hand and then on the other hand you have some of the chicest women shopping at A’Marees and Elyse Walker. A study in contrasts!
Only 5% on marketing at Doen seems... incomprehensible! I'd like to know what they are counting in their marketing budget. I suppose I've never seen a paid ad pop up in my feed but surely the influencer budget is huge.
There's no Saks in Denver but there is a Neiman's so selfishly hopeful/excited to be able to do in-store returns when they become one 😃
Same. I want to know how they account for influencer and affiliate etc. Celebrity styling. But it is so impressive to see the business strategy and execution laid out. I also think Brentwood Country Mart is a goldmine for a retailer or brand. So important to be there right now.
Brilliant location. I'm loving Fillmore right now. Great jewelry brands and overall fun blocks to shop. Looks like I'll be doing another field trip to visit in August when Catbird opens.
Yes, it keeps getting better and better! Would love some more small local brands on the block, but the rents are astronomical, pricing out the small players. Many spaces are so old they don't have the infrastructure needed (I've seen some that have all of ONE electrical outlet on the shop floor) so only the big brands can come in and renovate them to where they should be. It's a retail catch-22!

Wonder if the data shows that or they haven’t adjusted?

Spots like that are so interesting! And RHOC just started the new season. Whoa. I think it is going to be a wild ride.

I have not felt less choices available - it always feel like more more more to me? But I would love if things moved in that direction.
Same! I wonder who/how we are tracking to know for sure.
Catbird also looks to be opening on Fillmore in SF!
