Hello and oh wow! Welcome to new readers. So excited you are here.1 Thanks for joining. Another footnote for newbies.2 Today we’ve got a short format quick read. These come out 1-2 times a week. Thursday we’ll have a Deep Dive with loads of retail industry goodies and the latest business news.
What I’m reading…..📚
Finished Sunset Crowd - similar feeling to Daisy Jones and the Six but more Fashion and Hollywood stars and less music. I needed a good palette cleanser after The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store and before Demon Copperhead and this fit the bill. Just started Demon Copperhead last night.
What I’m excited about…..🤩
Lauren Sherman at the Line Sheet for Puck News announced the following: “I’m thrilled to announce star reporter Rachel Strugatz, inarguably the most knowledgeable and well-sourced beauty writer on the planet, is joining Puck as our contributing beauty correspondent. Every Wednesday, we’ll be sending a beauty-themed edition of Line Sheet featuring a dispatch from Rachel on what’s happening in her world. She’ll also be contributing reporting and insights on a rolling basis throughout the week.”
Who is Rachel Strugatz? A journalist I have loved to follow!! She has written for NYTimes, WWD, Business of Fashion. Such a smart and insightful writer. Why else is this important - further makes the point that Beauty is such an important part of the Retail and Business industry especially for the year ahead.
What I’m listening to…..🎧
Last week I shared the Gab Waller Vogue article, this week I’m listening to Waller’s interview with Olivia Perez on Friend of a Friend. The latest hot finds from fashion’s detective.
Trending now….. 🎯
I’m not the first person (or likely even third or fifth - maybe tenth) who has mentioned this podcast, sort of ironic given that the point of the podcast topic is that we are all seeing the same content. But it is a great listen.
Taste and Style. Thanks to this Ezra Klein podcast: How to Discover your own Taste (also here on NYTimes site) where Klein interviews
, a staff writer at The New Yorker, everyone is talking about discovering your own style. Since we are cleaning out our closets and thinking fresh for 2024, now is the time to be writing about discovering your own likes. Chayka wrote “Filterworld: How Algorithms Flattened Culture” which is out this week. The idea I loved in the podcast: “And I do think there is this way in which I would love the thing where I can kind of pay for the algorithm I want.” Yes!Other topics of taste and style:
- has a Substack if you want to dig deeper into his thoughts and ideas. He also has a book tour coming up. Check it out here
This Substack by
is the perfect companion read: Taking Style Inspiration and Making it Your Own. Timed so well for this conversation.- writes about her thoughts after listening in We Came, We Kleined. Can We Conquer?
My thoughts? As we comment on taste and style - wear what makes you happy! Nothing groundbreaking or original, but read what brings you joy, look at art that makes you smile, watch TV shows and movies to relax and unwind or learn something new. Just do what makes you happy and doesn’t harm anyone else (also, don’t yuck someone else’s yum.)
Rabbit Hole I’m in…..🐰🕳️
Sports, but make it more fashionable.
wrote Taylor Swift Just Went Varsity Jacket Official and I’m so excited for the designer, Kristin Juszczyk. She designs the coolest, original pieces for sports fans. She is also the wife of a 49ers player, Kyle Juszczyk, so clearly she’s seen a lot of the same pieces and had the need for something cool to wear to games. Vogue wrote about the jacket and Taylor’s style too. I think Juszczyk will be very busy for the Super Bowl and for next year I’d love to see some stadiums/teams partner with her and have a boutique in the stadium (or in an accessible and relevant spot for pop-ups.) How about some cool concert or college gear too?! Yes - watch this - Bloke Core and WAGs.Image via Brittany Mahomes instagram
How I’m working out….. 🧘♀️
The partnership with Peloton x Lululemon marketed as “Move for You” is really well done. It is more focused on how you feel, being present and trying new things vs do more/extremes. What would be brilliant marketing is after being awarded your badge you received a 10% discount to Lululemon.
Feeling Sunny and Sweet…..🍬🕶
Sunglasses and gummies? I’m obsessed.
What’s Next 🗓️
White Sales are happening now, so expect a lot of deals and promotions on bedding and editorials and articles that inspire you to get cozy at home. Post holidays it is time to snuggle up at home. It’s Hyggee season. Award season is in full swing and I’m so excited to see the stylists getting tagged and recognized. Danielle Goldberg and Karla Welch - amazing!
On Thursday 1/18 I’ll have another Deep Dive for Retail Diary with the latest CEO moves, collabs, award season highlights and (even more) luxury handbag news. I’ve also been gathering all the content around tweens, teens and Beauty so I’ll share my findings in the Deep Dive.
