My insights on a strong Out of Box Experience for online purchases, the Zac Posen designed Gap dress for Anne Hathaway is available for preorder, trending crinkle looks & lots of fashion reads.
I hate waste. What to do with those Glossier stickers? I am not a tween ... to into the trash they go. I also love old school catalogs but I glance for 3 or 4 minutes and then it gets tossed into recyclying. And if I need to return it is impossible to repackage some of these items with all the fancy paper and plastic. I would love an option for very simple packing to avoid the waste - remember Net-A-Porter used to offer that option instead of the fancy boxes? Now I think they do a less fancy once size fits all. I hear what you say about the experience and I love all those brands but stop the waste, please!
The GAP dress is fab and brilliant marketing. The last thing I personally need is another white dress in my closet BUT it’s a bummer they didn’t make more quantities for those who wanted!
Officine Universelle Buly has amazing OOBE. I ordered several monogrammed Baumes de Muses for myself and friends. The packaging and presentation was gorgeous including the small pouches the lip balms came in, and the personalized envelopes that the pouches came in (initials were in calligraphy on the envelopes). Very impressed, would order from the again without hesitation, especially if sending directly to someone as a gift. It all felt very special and luxe.
I remember being so impressed the first time I ordered a pair of shoes from Larroude! Even though I didn’t end up keeping them, I always think about how unique their approach was. It’s the little things that really stick out for a brand or retailer and make you want to go back 🙂
OOB topic...I really don't like silly waste like unnecessary products (especially fragrance samples, so personal!), but I love when I get a box from 24s or Theory and it's a product on a hanger and packed to minimize wrinkles. Back in the day Club Monaco always did lovely packaging, my last order was tee shirts and they were wadded up and dropped in a plastic bag that barely fit. Also, I'm feeling nostalgic reading about the Gap...love Zac Posen and looking forward to seeing where this goes.
Yes you get a quick adrenaline rush, but then it’s really just more waste in a world overwhelmed by waste. We need to be more environmentally conscious consumers!!
A great article. So often stuff is just tossed in an evelope. I sell vintage fashion online and always take great care to ship an attractive box. Branded boxes, tissues, thank you notes and discount codes. One year I shipped branded M&MS.
You're so right about highlighting the OOBE factor. I ordered a Polene bag a while ago and thought the packaging was minimal but very well done. The boxes are so well made and sturdy, they're excellent and reusable for many home/organizing purposes. The dustbag was surprisingly thick and velvety soft, and the bag was carefully nestled in the tissue paper. Net a Porter / The Outnet also excel at this as well!

Love it when the brand has the option to “opt out” brilliant point!

Really curious how many they offered and what the blockers were to offering more (material, production in a short time frame, etc.)

you can tell when the product is packaged well and when it is just thrown in.
