this made me laugh. yes, I've lived in the Bay Area for the last thirteen years (oh my!) but I still wear all black from my NYC days (I miss NYC too) and I wear a lot of athleisure....
Me too! Leggings and fleeces rule at the park 🤷🏻♀️ I’m forever trying to reconcile the role of context, environment, and other people in how one dresses. Somehow there was more harmony in my corner Bodega run outfits than in my outfit tries here but darned if I don’t still try. Will forever miss that daily street style inspiration!
That By Marlene Birger cropped trench 😳😍😍 I will be hunting that on resale. There’s a VB trench vest that I think about lovingly and is a one that got away for me. Praying for the day it shows up on RealReal or postmark 😂
Fantastic deep dive into the trench - This is the kind of history lesson that would have kept me awake in school!
I love my old Burberry classic as well as a sweeping black mid aught’s Alexander McQueen number that wraps me in glamorous mystery (as long as I keep my mouth shut). Love reading your work!
love this! both pieces sound like treasures. in school I always managed to turn every project into something about fashion history. might have annoyed my teachers but now all that studying is super useful!
Ha, I wish we’d been classmates. The best I managed was to subvert the forensics and debate team with a speech on aromatherapy - back in the day when the invention of the Glade plug-in would have been unthinkably woo.
this is always my favorite part. the cultural significance and how it comes back to certain things. it is the fashion history and anthropology of an item.
Love this so much! I have my mother’s vintage Burberry trench she purchased in the early 1980s; the details are beyond belief and the piece is as classic then as it is now. I love wearing it!
This was a really great read!
Thank you!!
Loved this so much! You really nail the fun/informative balance on these deep dives!
Coming from the Queen of kick pant dives that means a lot ❤️
Love these deep dives! And now I know what garbadine is, thank you 🙏🏻
Thank you!
Did I read you are from the Bay Area? How do you stay inspired to stay chic in a sea of fleeces and athleisure. I miss Ny 😭

I find that if I'm patient enough the pieces I love always show up somewhere. and if I loved them once I rarely get over them...

You have me considering a hooded trench now….
Reading the culturally significant moments around the trench coat was SO FUN! From breakfast at Tiffany’s to Beyoncé

another treasure - and makes sense given your fewer & better themes. I love your substack too!
Goes without saying that I’m obsessed with your Substack 😊
Thank you so much!!
Just don't *lose the belt (which can happen if it's too loose!).
Thanks 😉
